Gold EAs and NFP, CPI and FOMC: spreads and fills

Updated6 min read

XAUUSDNewsStrategy Tester

Around a scheduled release your broker can widen the gold spread and fill orders at a worse price, so take the dates from the official calendars and check those minutes on real ticks in the Strategy Tester.

  • The dates are public and fixed in advance: the BLS publishes the jobs and CPI schedules, the Federal Reserve the FOMC’s.
  • Around a release your broker can widen the XAUUSD spread and fill a market order at a worse price. How much is the broker’s and the moment’s, so this page quotes no figure.
  • A tester run on generated ticks smooths those minutes away. Check them on real ticks, on dates you pick from the official calendars.

Gold EA news filter pages tend to open with a number: so many pips on NFP, a spread that jumps to some multiple of normal. None of them says whose broker, which release or which second. This page takes the other route. It tells you where the dates come from, what a release does to the two things an Expert Advisor depends on, and how to look at those minutes in your own Strategy Tester run rather than take anyone’s number for it, ours included.

The three releases, and where their dates come from

Non-farm payrolls is part of the Employment Situation report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Its schedule of releases lists every 2026 date with a release time of 08:30 AM: 4 September for August’s data, 2 October and 6 November among those still to come. The same schedule shows why a hard-coded rule is a poor filter. The “first Friday” habit misses 11 February, a Wednesday, and 2 July, a Thursday.

CPI comes from the same agency on its own schedule, also at 08:30 AM: 11 September, then 14 October, 10 November and 10 December.

FOMC decisions follow the Federal Reserve’s meeting calendar: eight two-day meetings in 2026, four of them marked as “associated with a Summary of Economic Projections”. The remaining ones are 27–28 October and 8–9 December.

Inside the terminal the same events sit on the Calendar tab of the Toolbox, filterable “by priority” and by currency (MetaTrader 5 Help). One trap: your broker’s server clock is probably not the clock the BLS schedule is written in. MQL5’s calendar functions work in trade server time, not your local time (MQL5 reference), so convert before you compare a release to a trade.

What a release does to spread and fills

An Expert Advisor depends on two things around a release: the price it is quoted and the price it gets.

The quote. XAUUSD has no exchange-set spread; your broker sets it, as why XAUUSD for an Expert Advisor explains, and it can widen it whenever it chooses. An entry rule that fires in the seconds after a release pays whatever the spread is at that moment. Whether your broker widened it on a given release is in its recorded ticks, which the last section shows you how to read.

The fill. Under Market Execution, “a broker makes a decision about the order execution price without any additional discussion with the trader” (MetaTrader 5 Help). Stops are orders too. Our own risk disclosure puts it this way: “in fast or gapping markets — around scheduled news or at the weekly open — an order may be filled at a materially worse price than requested.”

We give no figure for either, deliberately. The widening is set by your broker, differs between brokers and between releases, and any single number would be a claim about a market we do not control.

How an Expert Advisor can stand aside

Three mechanisms exist, and each has a cost.

  1. A spread ceiling. Before it sends an order, the EA reads SYMBOL_SPREAD, “Spread value in points” (MQL5 reference), and refuses to enter above a limit. It needs no calendar, and it also refuses on any other wide-spread moment. It does nothing for a position already open.
  2. A calendar window. The EA queries the MQL5 economic calendar, filters for CALENDAR_IMPORTANCE_HIGH, “High importance” (MQL5 reference), and blocks new entries for some minutes either side. It relies on the calendar being complete and on the server-time conversion being right.
  3. Flat by design. A strategy that closes before a known time holds nothing through it. That only helps if the release falls outside its trading hours, so convert the release time to server time and check.

Standing aside has a price as well: a filter that skips the release also skips the move after it. Neither choice is safe; they are two different exposures.

Be plain about ours. None of our six Products documents a news filter, so do not assume one. Dawnbreak is flat before every trading day ends and holds nothing overnight; whether its trading hours include a release is a question for the tester, not for us. The way to see how it, or any other EA, behaves on those days is the next section.

How to see news in a Strategy Tester run

The modelling mode decides whether the release is in your data at all. MetaQuotes: “When testing on real ticks, a spread may change within a minute bar, whereas when generating ticks within a minute, a spread fixed in the appropriate bar is used” (MetaTrader 5 Help). On generated ticks, the release minute gets one spread for the whole minute.

So:

  • Choose Every tick based on real ticks, and check History Quality. Our own runs over 1 January to 7 September 2026 read 63 %, because IC Markets served real ticks only from 21 April. Every release before 21 April in that window sits in synthesised data.
  • Pick dates from the BLS and Fed pages above that fall where you do have real ticks, such as the 7 August or 4 September payrolls.
  • Run those days in visual mode, which MetaQuotes says lets you “visualize exactly how the Expert Advisor performs trade operations during backtesting” (MetaTrader 5 Help).
  • In the report’s deal list, mark every trade opened or closed within a few minutes of a release, and read those fills against the rest.

If a seller says their EA has a news filter, ask how it was tested. MetaQuotes’ calendar reference does not say what the calendar functions return inside the Strategy Tester, so a filter that reads it live may never have run in a backtest at all. How to backtest a gold EA in MT5 covers the rest of the setup.

Before you act on any of this

Every XauStack figure comes from the MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester, never from live trading, and no result is promised anywhere on this site. This page makes no forecast about any release or about gold. A tester run on real ticks shows you past spreads, not the fill you will get. Read the risk disclosure before running any Expert Advisor through a release on a funded account.
