Gold EA account size and what it does to drawdown

Updated6 min read

RiskStrategy Tester

A drawdown percentage is measured against an equity peak that starts at the deposit, so when trade sizes do not scale with the account, a smaller deposit shows a larger drawdown percentage for the same trades.

  • A drawdown percentage is a fraction of the equity peak it fell from, and that peak starts at the deposit.
  • Our Helix Trail Strategy Tester runs show the same 259 trades and the same +$32,744.30 at two deposits, with maximum equity drawdown at 19.26 % and 53.78 %.
  • An account minimum marks where tested behaviour stops being representative. It is not a floor below which loss is unlikely.

Two readers arrive here. One is asking how much money to run a gold EA. The other has seen a low drawdown figure and does not believe it. Both questions share an answer: a gold EA drawdown percentage and a XAUUSD EA account size are two halves of one arithmetic.

What the gold EA drawdown percentage is measured against

The MetaTrader 5 testing report does not have a drawdown field. It has six: Balance Drawdown Absolute, Maximal and Relative, and the same three again on equity (MetaTrader 5 Help). They are not interchangeable.

MetaQuotes defines Balance Drawdown Maximal as the “Difference in deposit currency between the highest local balance value and the next lowest account balance value”, and Balance Drawdown Relative as that same difference “in percentage terms”. The equity pair mirrors it on equity values, which move while a position is still open rather than only when it closes.

So a relative drawdown in an MT5 backtest is a ratio, and its denominator is the equity peak the loss fell from — a peak that starts at the deposit you typed into the tester’s Settings tab and grows as the run makes money. MetaQuotes writes the relative figure out as the maximum of (Local High − Next Local Low) / Local High × 100 (MetaTrader 5 Help). The full definitions belong to how to read a backtest report. What this page owns is what the deposit does to them.

One run, two deposits

The desk holds two Strategy Tester runs of Helix Trail on its Standard Profile. Both cover 1 January 2026 to 7 September 2026, XAUUSD on an IC Markets demo server (ICMarketsSC-Demo), leverage 1:500, History Quality 63 %. Deposit and leverage are typed into the tester’s Settings tab before a run (MetaTrader 5 Help).

At a $100,000 deposit, the Strategy Tester reported net +$32,744.30 over that window, +32.7 % on the $100,000, profit factor 1.27, maximum equity drawdown 19.26 %, across 259 trades.

At a $25,000 deposit, over the identical window, the Strategy Tester reported the same 259 trades and the same net +$32,744.30 — but +131 % on the $25,000, and maximum equity drawdown of 53.78 %.

Nothing about the strategy changed. Identical across the two runs: the dollar net (+$32,744.30), the trade count (259), the profit factor (1.27) and the recovery factor (1.45). Moved with the deposit: the return percentage (+32.7 % against +131 %), both drawdown percentages (maximum equity drawdown 19.26 % against 53.78 %) and the Sharpe ratio (2.50 against 2.36). The $100,000 run is published in full on the Helix Trail backtest page; the $25,000 run is the same trades at the smaller deposit.

This is why the published run is the $100,000 one, and why the Catalogue entry carries the consequence in its own words: “$100,000 or more (at $25,000 the tested drawdown passed half the account)”.

Why the percentage moved and the dollars did not

Helix Trail’s two runs booked the same 259 trades and the same dollar net at both deposits in the Strategy Tester, so only the deposit moved the percentage — a smaller deposit means a smaller peak for the same dollar swing to be measured against, and the percentage rises, though not in simple proportion. Quartering the deposit here did not quadruple the drawdown figure; it moved 19.26 % to 53.78 %.

A system that scales each position with the account behaves the other way: the dollar figure moves with the deposit while the percentages stay roughly comparable. Which of the two you are reading depends on how its size is set; for ours, read each Product’s Catalogue entry for its size input.

Both are honest ways to test a strategy. They simply produce headline numbers that cannot be compared without knowing which you are reading. To size a trade by risk yourself, the XAUUSD lot size calculator does the arithmetic for your balance, risk and stop.

How to read someone else’s figure

When a number is quoted at you, four questions decide whether it means anything:

  1. What deposit produced it? No deposit, no percentage.
  2. Was position sizing fixed or risk-based? That tells you whether the percentage would survive your account size.
  3. Which of the six drawdown fields is it? Absolute, maximal and relative are three different numbers from one run.
  4. Balance or equity? Balance ignores what an open position is doing. Equity does not, and for anything that holds a position through a pullback the equity figure is the honest one.

Then do the thing that settles it: re-run the strategy at your own deposit. The Backtest edition exists for this — it starts only inside the Strategy Tester, so you can set your own deposit, spread and window and read the six fields yourself. Pick one from the strategies page.

What a gold EA minimum deposit is, and what it is not

Each Product’s Catalogue entry states its own minimum, and they differ because the strategies differ:

  • Dawnbreak and Reclaim: $10,000 or more.
  • Meridian Trend, at the default risk per trade: $25,000 or more.
  • Helix Basket: $25,000 or more.
  • Aurum Recoil on the Steady and Balanced Profiles: $25,000 or more. Its Deep Margin Profile is $100,000 or more and only after your own multi-year test — the Catalogue records that the desk’s multi-year study of that configuration on a $25,000 account ended in account loss in 2023, in 2024 and in 2025.
  • Helix Trail: $100,000 or more, for the reason set out above.

Plainly, a minimum is the size below which the tested behaviour stops being representative. It is not a level above which loss becomes unlikely, and it is not sufficiency. A larger deposit changes the scale the percentage is measured on; it does not change what the strategy does.

Before you act on any of this

Every figure above comes from the MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester over 1 January 2026 to 7 September 2026 on IC Markets demo data, never from live trading, and no result is promised anywhere on this site. Two departures apply to all of them: the tester charged no commission on XAUUSD, while real trading on that account cost roughly $7 per lot round-turn that the net does not deduct, and fills are modelled rather than executed. History Quality was 63 % because real ticks begin on 21 April 2026; January to April were synthesised from M1 bars. Before you choose a deposit or a Product, read the risk disclosure.
