MT4 vs MT5 for a gold EA in 2026

For a gold EA, MT5 and MT4 differ most in testing: MT5 can replay the ticks your broker recorded, while MT4 builds ticks from bars and charges one spread for the whole run.
- For gold, the tester is where the platforms differ most. MT5 can replay the ticks your broker recorded; MT4 builds ticks from bars and charges one spread for the whole run.
- An MT4 EA and an MT5 EA are two different programs. A record or a report from one is not evidence about the other.
- An MT5 account is either hedging or netting. Find out which before you attach anything.
Most MT4 vs MT5 comparisons are feature lists: more timeframes, more order types, a built-in calendar. For somebody choosing a gold Expert Advisor, three differences decide more than the rest: how each platform tests an EA, how each counts positions, and whether the EA you are looking at exists on your platform at all.
The Strategy Tester is the biggest difference
MetaQuotes’ own comparison table puts it in one line: the MetaTrader 5 tester is “Multi-threaded + Multi-currency + Real ticks”, the MetaTrader 4 tester is “Single thread” (MetaQuotes).
The part that matters for gold is the ticks. MetaTrader 4’s help says “the price history stored in the client terminal includes only Bid prices”, and that “to model Ask prices, the strategy tester uses the current spread of a symbol at the beginning of testing”. Its most detailed mode, Every tick, still fills the movement inside each bar using “interpolation based on predefined templates” (MetaTrader 4 Help).
MetaTrader 5 adds Every tick based on real ticks: “Testing is performed using real ticks of financial instruments, accumulated by brokers. No simulation is performed” (MetaTrader 5 Help).
On gold that difference is not academic. The spread on XAUUSD moves through the day and widens around scheduled news. Unless you type in a spread of your own, an MT4 run charges whatever spread was showing when you pressed Start, to every trade in the history, whether that moment was quiet or not. An MT5 run on real ticks charges the spread each tick actually carried, where your broker has kept those ticks. How to backtest a gold EA in MT5 covers the setting, and what History Quality tells you when real ticks run out.
Hedging and netting: MT5 asks you to know which you have
MetaTrader 4 lets an account hold several positions on one symbol, including opposite ones. MetaTrader 5 began with one position per symbol and added a second system in 2016. The release note describes both: under netting “you can have only one common position for a symbol at the same time”, while under hedging “you can have multiple open positions of one and the same symbol, including opposite position”; and “since the new system is similar to the one used in MetaTrader 4, it will be familiar to traders” (MetaTrader 5 release notes).
The system is chosen per account, and MetaTrader 5 shows it “in the terminal window header and the Journal”. An EA built to hold several gold positions at once behaves differently on a netting account, because every new order folds into the one position already open. So the account type is a requirement to read before buying, like the deposit. Our own Catalogue states it per Product: four ask for a hedging account, and two run on either. If you plan to run two EAs side by side, more than one gold EA on one MT5 account covers what netting does to that.
Two programs, not one version each
MetaEditor’s help describes compilation as turning “a source code of an
MQL4/MQL5 program into the machine language”, with the result “an executable
program file (*.EX4 or *.EX5)”
(MetaEditor Help).
An .ex4 is written for MetaTrader 4 and an .ex5 for MetaTrader 5, in two
different languages.
That has a consequence sellers rarely spell out. When a gold EA is offered “for MT4 and MT5”, you are looking at two programs that share a name. A track record or a backtest from the MT4 one is evidence about the MT4 one. Verifying a gold EA track record makes the same point about settings and versions: ask which file produced the numbers you were shown.
MetaTrader 5 also has more to offer the code: MetaQuotes’ table lists 21 timeframes against 9, so an EA that reads M2, M20 or H2 has no MT4 equivalent to port to.
Broker availability in 2026
MT4 is not going away overnight. Finance Magnates reported in January 2018 that MetaQuotes had stopped selling MetaTrader 4 licences to new customers, quoting the company: “it is no longer possible to implement new features that should meet nowadays increased requirements” (Finance Magnates). Brokers that already had MT4 could keep it, which is why you still see both on offer.
So the practical question is narrower than “which platform is better”. Does your broker offer an MT5 account with gold on it, which symbol does it use, and is the account hedging or netting? The first two are answered in Market Watch, as the XAUUSD symbol guide shows. The third is on the window header once you log in.
Where XauStack sits
Everything we sell is MetaTrader 5 only: each build is an .ex5, and there is no
MT4 version of any Product, so none of them will run on an MT4 account. Every
figure on our strategy pages comes from an MT5 Strategy Tester run, and the free
Backtest Edition lets you repeat it on your own broker’s real
ticks, where your broker has them, before you pay anything.
Before you act on any of this
Every figure XauStack publishes comes from the MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester, never from live trading, and no result is promised anywhere on this site. A better tester makes a test more faithful; it does not make a strategy work. Trading gold on leverage carries a high risk of losing money rapidly: read the risk disclosure first.
