VPS for a gold EA on MT5: when you need one

You need a VPS when your strategy has work to do while your own computer is off, asleep or offline, because an Expert Advisor acts only while its terminal is running and connected.
- An Expert Advisor acts only while its terminal is running and connected. A VPS is how you keep that true when your own computer is off.
- Lower latency to your broker narrows one gap between tester and live. It does not change spread, commission or strategy.
- MetaTrader 5’s built-in hosting moves running Expert Advisors and their inputs, but not scripts, not DLL calls and not charts without an Expert Advisor.
Most answers to “do I need a VPS for my gold EA” come from companies that sell VPS hosting. This one comes from MetaQuotes’ own documentation and from what our Catalogue says about each Product, and it starts with the question the sellers skip: whether you need one at all.
Does a gold EA need a VPS at all?
An Expert Advisor is code running inside your MetaTrader 5 terminal. When the terminal closes, the computer sleeps or the connection drops, nothing is watching the position. Our own risk disclosure says it in one line: “an Expert Advisor cannot manage a position while your terminal is disconnected.”
So the question is not whether a VPS is good. It is whether your strategy has work to do while you are away from the machine. Our Catalogue answers it per Product, from how each one trades:
- Helix Basket, Helix Trail and Aurum Recoil: VPS recommended. Helix Basket is “always on while the market is open”, and Helix Trail “works on its own around the clock”.
- Meridian Trend and Reclaim: VPS optional. Meridian Trend’s entry reads “it can run on your own machine”.
- Dawnbreak: VPS optional, because it trades session hours only and is flat before the trading day ends. Optional is not the same as unnecessary: your terminal still has to be running for the whole session, including the close it relies on to flatten.
If your own computer is reliably on and online for the hours your strategy trades, you may not need anything else. If it is not, the Helix Trail strategy page is an example of a Product whose Catalogue entry recommends a VPS for exactly that reason.
What latency changes, and what it does not
Latency is the time an order takes to reach your broker’s server. MetaQuotes’ hosting picks a server near your broker: “the system will automatically select the server that is closest to your broker”, and it shows “comparison of network delays between your terminal on the hosting server and the broker server, and between your local and the broker server” (MetaTrader 5 Help). Its product page claims “96% of broker servers can be accessed in less than 10 ms, while 84% — in less than 3 ms” (MQL5 VPS). That is MetaQuotes’ figure about its network, not a measurement of ours.
Be clear about what that buys. Latency is one of five gaps between a Strategy Tester run and a live account, set out in why a gold EA backtest differs from live trading. A faster route does not narrow your broker’s spread, does not refund commission, and does not change what the strategy decides. It matters most to a strategy that reacts within seconds. None of our Products is a scalper; the fastest timeframe any of them uses is M5.
MetaTrader 5’s built-in virtual hosting
MetaQuotes describes the service as “the round-the-clock operation of the trading platform”, for Expert Advisors, Market robots and signal copying, all of which require “constant connection to a trade server and uninterrupted power supply” (MetaTrader 5 Help). You set it up from within MetaTrader 5 and move your setup across by migration. A general Windows VPS from another provider works too; you then install MetaTrader 5 on it and copy your files across exactly as in the install guide. It is also one of the routes for running an MT5 EA on a Mac.
What migrates, and what does not
Migration copies a snapshot of your terminal. MetaQuotes lists what goes across: “account connection data, as well as all open charts, signal copying parameters, running Expert Advisors and indicators, FTP and email settings are copied to the virtual server” (MetaTrader 5 Help). The same page says what does not:
- “Scripts cannot be moved during migration even if they are running in an endless loop.”
- “DLL calls are completely forbidden in the virtual platform.”
- “charts without Expert Advisors are ignored, even if custom indicators are running on these charts.”
- “Charts with non-standard timeframes and symbols are not transferred.”
- “Accounts with one-time password authentication cannot be used on a VPS.”
Two consequences follow. Your inputs travel as they were at the moment of migration, so load your preset and check the Inputs tab before you migrate; change them later and you migrate again, since “Migration is performed every time you synchronize the trading platform”. And once an Expert Advisor moves, “the automated trading function is automatically disabled in the local platform”, so that two terminals on one account do not trade the same strategy twice. Do not switch it back on at home.
A XauStack build on a VPS
A XauStack build is compiled for up to two MT5 account logins, and at start-up it checks the login it finds itself on. It does not check the machine. On a VPS the terminal connects with the same account, so the build starts exactly as it does at home. It makes no network call, so there is no WebRequest URL to allow there either; what an account-locked build is explains why. Attach it to a different login, on a VPS or anywhere else, and it refuses to start.
After migrating, read the hosted terminal’s own log under Toolbox → VPS → Journal, which MetaQuotes says can show “Experts — information about the Expert Advisor and indicator operation” (MetaTrader 5 Help). A build that refused its account says so there, in one line.
Before you act on any of this
Every XauStack figure comes from the MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester, never from live trading, and no result is promised anywhere on this site. A VPS keeps a terminal running; it does not make a strategy work, and it cannot stop a position losing money. The percentages above are MetaQuotes’ own claims about its network. Read the risk disclosure before running anything unattended on a funded account.
