Running an MT5 EA on a Mac: installer, VM or VPS

Updated6 min read

MetaTrader 5InstallVPS

MetaQuotes’ macOS installer runs the Windows terminal inside Wine, with a Windows virtual machine or VPS as alternatives; test the EA and Strategy Tester there first, and only the VPS runs while your Mac sleeps.

  • MetaQuotes ships a macOS installer. It runs the Windows version of MetaTrader 5 inside Wine, on Intel and Apple silicon Macs.
  • MetaQuotes’ help lists nothing missing on a Mac, and says nothing either way about Expert Advisors or the Strategy Tester. Run both once on your own Mac before you rely on them.
  • A Windows virtual machine (on Apple silicon, Windows for Arm under emulation) or a Windows VPS runs the Windows terminal. Only the VPS keeps running while your Mac sleeps.

MetaTrader 5 is a Windows program, and Mac owners keep asking whether an Expert Advisor will run on theirs. Broker pages, VPS sellers and a long run of MQL5 forum threads answer it; one from February 2026 is titled simply “Will MT5 work on Imac?” (MQL5 forum). This page answers from MetaQuotes’ own help, and says plainly where that help stops.

What MetaQuotes ships for macOS

MetaTrader 5’s help says: “We provide a special installer for the platform on macOS.” The installer “identifies your system, downloads and installs the latest Wine version, configures it, and then installs MetaTrader within it”. On requirements: “The minimum macOS version required to install the platform is Catalina (10.15.7). The platform runs on all modern versions of macOS and supports all Apple processors, from M1 to the latest released versions” (MetaTrader 5 Help). The installer is on MetaQuotes’ download page and in the platform’s Help menu.

So the Mac app is the Windows terminal running inside Wine, a layer that lets Windows programs run on macOS. Your files sit in a Windows-style folder tree inside it, by default ~/Library/Application Support/net.metaquotes.wine.metatrader5/drive_c/Program Files/MetaTrader 5. Expert Advisors go in MQL5/Experts under that folder, and from there the install guide reads the same as on Windows.

Where MetaQuotes’ help stops

The Mac installation page covers installing, the Wine version and the interface language. It does not list any feature missing on a Mac. Nor does it say that Expert Advisors, the Strategy Tester or the Market work there. We found no MetaQuotes page that does either. Treat all three as things to check on your own machine.

The Wine version matters. MetaQuotes asks existing Mac users to read it in the startup log and warns: “If your Wine version is below 8.0.1, we strongly recommend uninstalling the old platform along with the Wine prefix in which it is installed.” People who build their own Wine setup meet other problems. A February 2026 forum reply, which a moderator attributed to a MetaQuotes employee, says the installer “installs MetaTrader with all the necessary components on MacOS, and the terminal works good”, and warns hand-built setups that “Wine 10.3 - Wine 11.0 have known launch issues that are caused by Wine itself” (MQL5 forum).

Older threads report a Strategy Tester that would not start on a Mac (MQL5 forum, 2020). That was an older install, and we have not reproduced it. Expert Advisors that load a Windows DLL are the other known risk: one vendor states that “The standard Mac build, as installed by MetaQuotes’ wizard, does not support the EA’s DLL imports” for its own Expert Advisor (PineConnector).

A short check on your own Mac

  1. Install from MetaQuotes’ download page, not from a copy found elsewhere.
  2. Read the first lines of the Journal. MetaQuotes’ own example shows the form: “Windows 10 build 18362 on Wine 8.0.1”.
  3. Log in to a demo account, attach the Expert Advisor to a chart, and read the Experts tab for its start-up message.
  4. Run a short test in the Strategy Tester. If it will not start, you know before you have paid for anything.
  5. Ask the seller whether the Expert Advisor needs Allow DLL imports.

A Windows virtual machine

A virtual machine runs real Windows on the Mac, and MetaTrader 5 inside it as on any PC. On Apple silicon that means Windows for Arm. Microsoft says Parallels Desktop versions 18, 19 and 20 “are authorized solutions for running Arm versions of Windows 11 Pro and Windows 11 Enterprise” on M1, M2 and M3 Macs, where “you can also use apps in x64 or x86 emulation”. You need a Windows licence: “A unique license is required for each instance of Windows 11 Pro” (Microsoft Support).

Parallels’ knowledge base records a known problem: “Metatrader 4 or recent builds of Metatrader 5 don’t launch in Windows 11 on Mac computers with Apple silicon”. Its advice is “to install a previous build of Metatrader 5” (Parallels KB). The article carries no date, so check it against the build you are given. On an Intel Mac, Apple’s Boot Camp is the other route: “you can install Microsoft Windows 10 on your Intel-based Mac” (Apple Support).

Like the installer, a virtual machine trades only while your Mac is awake and online.

A Windows VPS

A Windows VPS is a rented Windows server in a data centre. MetaTrader 5 runs there as it does on any PC, and you check on it from the Mac over a remote desktop connection. Your Mac can sleep, travel or shut down. Our VPS guide covers when a gold Expert Advisor needs one, and what MetaTrader 5’s own hosting does and does not move.

Activations, if you buy on the Market

Trying all three routes can cost Market activations. MetaTrader’s help says a purchase “can only be run on the same hardware and operating system” (MetaTrader 5 Help, Market), and the Market rules count activations as “different hardware + OS configurations” (MQL5 Market rules). By that wording the Mac installer, a virtual machine on the same Mac and a VPS are three configurations. Check how many activations a product has before you try each.

A XauStack build on a Mac

A build bought from this site checks the account login it finds itself on, not the machine. It asks for no URL to allow and spends no Market activation. We publish no Mac test of our builds, so the practical check is step 4 above: the free Backtest Edition runs only inside the Strategy Tester, which makes it a direct test of whether the tester works on your Mac.

Before you act on any of this

Whichever route you choose, “an Expert Advisor cannot manage a position while your terminal is disconnected”, in the words of our own risk disclosure. Every figure XauStack publishes comes from the MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester, never from live trading, and no result is promised anywhere on this site. Trading gold on leverage carries a high risk of losing money rapidly: read the risk disclosure before you run anything on a funded account.
